Tokyo 2020 Olympics to be postponed due to coronavirus, IOC member claims
Dick Pound has advised that this summer’s Tokyo Olympics will be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sports world across the globe have been impacted by COVID-19 and it’s not clear when the pandemic will end.
Many sports have been canceled or postponed with the Premier League season in England. The same won’t be resumed until the 30th of April at the earliest.
Olympics were not due to start until the 24th of July, Canadian Pound has revealed that a postponement is likely.
“According to the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound told USA Today.
“The parameters have not been determined yet, but the Games are not going to start on July 24´´.“The same will come in stages. We will postpone this and begin to deal with moving this.”
Canada and Australia had already announced that they would not compete in Japan this summer if the Olympics went ahead due to situation we have as well as British Olympic Association. Its chairman High Robertson said Team GB would withdraw too.
“Training facilities are currently closed around the country, so there is no way they could get prepared as much as they need for a Games.
“A part of this, there is the appropriateness of holding an Olympic Games at the situation like this.
“We have already informed the IOC that we think their four-week pause is absolutely the best thing to do.”
“We do not see any way that this can go ahead,” said Robertson. “I guess we will be joining Australia & Canada shortly.
“It’s very simple as if the virus continues as predicted by the government, there is no way we can send a team. On the other hand the team has no time and conditions to get ready by then.´´
As per latest update Tokyo Olympic Games are to be postponed until summer 2021 according to Japan´s prime minister Shinzo Abe which was an inevitable decision due to coronavirus pandemic.
